For me this week was a break from much of school work and my research. While this was obviously not ideal in terms of getting stuff done, it allowed me the opportunity to travel to Perú to see much of the country, explore my culture, and see family. My mom is Peruvian and as a child we would go back yearly to see family and go to school. This allowed me to speak Spanish and travel even as a child. However, this yearly trip would stop as my grandparents moved to the US and I had not been since I was 10. This was a huge chance for me to go back and see many landmarks in Lima, where we would visit, and also to explore the city and surroundings of Cusco, a place I had yet to visit. I saw Machu Picchu and learned about the Quechua culture that my grandfather grew up in but I also had the eye opening experience of seeing large amounts of poverty that was present in the Andes region of Perú. This was especially interesting during Thanksgiving as it provided a chance to really recognize how lucky I am to grow up where I do and under the circumstances that I do and how lucky I am to have opportunities like ISM to study an area that I choose. In talking to my cousins and explaining the program to them, this is something that they would have dreamed of having in Perú. This drives me to want to work even harder at what I am doing to make the most of the opportunity I have.
Additionally, the week before Thanksgiving I had the chance to interview Professor John Worrall, a criminology and criminal justice professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. While Professor Worrall did not have a lot of experience in the field, his academic perspective on the issue and his expertise in the field of policing and police misconduct was pertinent to my research. Also, he pointed out the fact that wrongful convictions are not a major part of his teachings even though it was criminology and criminal justice. This highlights the lack of awareness that is often brought to the issue.
Goals for the coming week
As we move closer and closer to the Original Work project being due it is crucial that I continue to research and find the information that I am going to include while I begin to plan the creation of my website. For this week I am finishing my research on reforms for wrongful convictions which will be a huge part of my website and will do a second research assessment on case studies of the wrongfully convicted. This will then move into next week where I work on the creation of my website and the transition of information.
