This week I continued to brainstorm ideas for a final project for the end of the ISM year. I have four main ideas that I am planning to address this Friday during my interview with Mr. Young. Firstly, I am thinking about doing an in depth analysis of a case that he is working on. I would need his help choosing which case exactly that is but I have done some research into a case. That case is Michael Beal v. Pruvit Ventures, Inc.. This case revolves around a questionable contract breach and resignation with compensation and tortious interference involved. With so many components this case has also gone through multiple rounds of appeals and was even appealed to the Texas Supreme Court, though I am under the impression it did not get taken up. This case could be a super interesting way for me to dive into appellate law and see how the process works for a complex case. Other ideas I have include a study of a specific appellate issue such as false confessions or prosecutorial misconduct and study how this would be combated on appeal. This would tie my work in wrongful convictions from the first semester into the real world exposure I am trying to gain in the second semester and second half of this class. I also could create a guide or checklist for brief writing or could study the Supreme Court and the selection process that is used to decide which cases they review. These would all showcase my learning in a way that is tangible and clear to see.
Goals for the coming week
This Friday is a big day for ISM. In the morning, I have my interview with Mr. Young where I hope to make a decision about my final product and possibly make him my mentor for the rest of the year. I am hoping he accepts or is willing to push me onwards to someone else. Additionally, we have our ISM Showcase event at UTD and I am extremely excited to share what I have learned about wrongful convictions on a bigger stage and in front of a larger audience.
