In the words of Bon Jovi, “we’re halfway there.”  While this is often seen as a celebratory mark as we get that much closer to summer break and the hopefully exciting senior year, it is also a starting point for the semester we have ahead.  After focusing on the issue of wrongful convictions specifically for almost the entirety of the first semester and after having created a website that shows my research and much of the work I have done. I am not looking to expand my topic into a more professional focus as opposed to a research focus.  For me this means expanding into criminal law as a whole, with an emphasis on defense as that is more easily tied to my work in wrongful convictions.  Additionally, I am interested in criminal appellate law.  While this is a tedious field and very focused, I feel that this easily ties into my prior work throughout the year and is something that I find very interesting.

Additionally, the second goal from the start of the semester, and part of the reason I am choosing to expand my topic, is the goal of finding a mentor.  This is something I am going to try and accomplish by setting up additional interviews and creating opportunities to meet with professionals in the legal field that could be potential mentors for me.

Goals for the coming week

This Friday I have an interview with lawyer Walker Stevens Young here in Frisco.  I found Young particularly interesting because he has experience in many different fields of law and will likely have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with me.  Another goal for me in these interviews is to change my focus.  While my wrongful conviction interviews were very focused on the topic and learning about that, these interviews I am hoping are going to be more shaped around the career and the paths they took, their daily lives, their work, and more.  I feel that this is the best way to make a connection and to eventually increase my expertise in the field and eventually find a mentor.
