This past week I had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Walker Steven Young, an attorney at Scheef & Stone LLP, a firm based in Frisco. Mr. Young has a strong focus on working in appeals. This is an area I am planning on exploring this semester. Our interview focused on talking about the basics of law, what his life is like, and briefly some of the cases he has worked on and what he learned from them. He had plenty of advice for me as a student and prospective lawyer and this was a major success for me. I want to thank Mr. Young for his willingness to meet and talk to me and for the interest he showed throughout our conversation. I am hoping to set up a follow up meeting if he has time for it and I see Mr. Young as a possible mentor if he is willing. This interview allowed me to learn more about the appellate process and the appellate practice in comparison to trial law which he has also experienced.
Goals for the coming week
This week I have two major goals set. Firstly, I need to prepare for my Original Work Reflection speech next Monday. This is a good way for me to not only share my findings with the class but also to really recap on what I have accomplished so far and what my plan is moving forward into the second semester. Secondly, as I mentioned, I would like to set up a second interview with Mr. Young or at least an interview with a different lawyer if Mr. Young does not have time in his schedule. Because I am largely shifting topics I need to work to find and secure a mentorship as early as I can.
I want to include that this weekend I have a state championship tournament to work around and that will be my main focus so I need to do what I can to be productive during the week to make progress in my work.
